Road Trip Suggestion: Driving Up North from Kuala Lumpur
From Klia - Kuala Lumpur City Centre - Cameron Highland - Ipoh - Taiping - Pulau Pinang - Kedah - Bukit Kayu Hitam (7 days)
Your road trips start from Klia after you have collected your car hire from the car rental provider. Make sure you check all the car tires, engines, light and signal light is working properly. Usually the smallest things we will forget, for example you need to check the power supply from the cigarette lighter is functioning, because you will need it for your GPS Maps or smartphone power supply. Besides that, don’t forget to check the car viper as well, because Malaysia is located in the area where throughout the year you may get some shower rain. Last but not least make sure you have a local data simcard or your local home simcard is roaming. We have heard many feedbacks from customers and some review site that doing road trips are fun but it consumes a lot of energy especially if you are going to drive a lot and visit many places.
KLIA to Kuala Lumpur City Centre
We start our journey from Klia by visiting Kuala Lumpur the capital of Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur is the heart of the financial and economy district of Malaysia, thus driving in the Kuala Lumpur areas will be hectic especially during the peak hours when people are chasing to office. However there is so much to do in the Kuala Lumpur cities. You can visit the KLCC, Menara Kuala Lumpur, King’s Palace, Thean Hou Temple, Tugu Negara the National Monument, Lake Gardens, National Mosque, Merdeka Square boasting the world’s tallest free standing flag pole and in the evening you can proceed to Kuala Selangor fishing village to see fireflies along the mangrove trees from the river bank which is situated around 1 hour away by driving from Kuala Lumpur city. You will have to put up a night in Kuala Lumpur before you continue your journey up north or you can always stay one night in Kuala Selangor and en-route. If you choose to stay one night in Kuala Lumpur, the next morning you can visit Batu Caves, which is a huge limestone caves with 272 stair steps to reach the Hindu Temple caves entrance, before heading towards north.
Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highland
Kuala Lumpur ( from Batu Caves ) driving up north to Cameron Highland is about 3 hours 30 minutes and covering about 210 kilometres. The most popular route driving up to Cameron Highland is via Simpang Pulai exit. After the exit, the driving route will be all the way climbing and you will need to have a little experience driving in such environment. So make sure you will know when to engage LOW gear when need arise! You can enjoy the scenic hilly and forest view while driving all the way up 1542 metres above sea level to Cameron Highland. The air and environment there are usually cool and fresh. The main activity in Cameron Highland is vegetable and mushroom farming. You can visit strawberry farm, bee farm, and mushroom farm and most importantly it is a nice place to relax and enjoying the evening breeze. You can actually explore more in Cameron Highland and visit the nearby town in Cameron Highland (Tanah Rata). Here all the locals’ people hang out for foods and business activities. There are so many hotels and guest house available in Cameron Highland.
Cameron Highland to Ipoh Cities
The next morning from Cameron Highland, you can descend to Ipoh and it will take you about 2 hours driving to reach Ipoh. Ipoh is one of the best town to visit and it is famous for the many limestone caves presences here for millions of year before. One of the famous one is Sam Poh Tong. Ipoh is also famous for its Roti Bakar and White Coffee, make sure you eat this before you head to Taiping.
Ipoh to Taiping
Ipoh to Taiping is about 45 minute drives. Taiping is one of the cities in Ipoh. I personally suggest that if you are coming to Taiping, the first point of visit you will want to do is The First Galleria. First Galleria offers you much information about this city and within the surround radius of 5 to 8 kilometres you can visit the Taiping Lake Garden, Taiping War Cemetry, Perak Museum and Spritzer Ecopark. If you will like to explore more Eco natural place in Taiping, you can drive for another 30 minutes from the Taiping Lake Garden to Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve and some famous charcoal industries from that area. You will have a chance to explore the night fire flies tour in the evening.
Taiping to Pulau Pinang
The next destination from Taiping is going to head further north to Pulau Pinang. The journey from Taiping to Pulau Pinang takes about 1 hour 50 minutes from the Plus Highway and the distance is around 110 kilometres. Pulau Pinang consists of Island and also mainland. We will be heading to the Pulau Pinang Island via the Pulau Pinang Bridge. There are 2 bridges connecting Pulau Pinang from the mainland. We are taking the first Pulau Pinang bridge which will connect us via Lebuh Raya Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu and to the city centre of Pulau Pinang.
There are so many things to do in Penang. You can explore things to do in Batu Feringghi (Beach and Seaside), Geroge Town (Unesco World Heritage Site), Gurney Walk and Ayer Itam. To names few of the attraction you can see in Penang are Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si Temple, The Ayer Itam Wet market for foods and bargain items, Cheong Fatt Sze Mansion, Escape Adventure Land, Adventure Zone Theme Park, Penang War Museum, Penang Khoo Kong Si, Fort Cornwallis and many more to explore if you have more times in Penang. Penang is also famous for its local multi ethnic foods and don’t miss the King and Queen of fruit (Durian and Mangosteen) if you are here Penang during the fruits season in May, June and July in Teluk Bahang and Balik Pulau.
